Literary Analysis: The Evolution of Southern Gothic in Contemporary Fiction

Critical Essay | Literary Theory | Fall 2023

This critical analysis explores how contemporary authors have reimagined Southern Gothic traditions while maintaining the genre's core elements of decay, haunting pasts, and social critique. The essay examines works by Jesmyn Ward, Karen Russell, and Toni Morrison, analyzing how these authors have expanded the genre's boundaries to address modern social issues.

The research involved extensive textual analysis and the integration of scholarly sources on literary theory, regional literature, and cultural studies. The paper demonstrates my ability to synthesize multiple critical voices while developing my own interpretive framework and proposing original insights about these texts.

This work reflects my development in SLO 1: Critical Thinking and Creative Problem Solving as I analyze advanced concepts in literature, demonstrating the ability to synthesize information and develop original insights within the context of contemporary Southern Gothic studies.

Rhetorical Analysis of Environmental Advocacy Campaigns

Research Project | Media Analysis | Spring 2024

This project examines the rhetorical strategies employed by three major environmental organizations in their public-facing campaigns. Through close analysis of visual elements, language choices, and platform-specific adaptations, I identify how these organizations tailor their messages to different audience demographics.

The research combines traditional rhetorical analysis with digital media studies, demonstrating my command of genre-specific methods and stylistic techniques in academic analysis. I've applied the conventions of rhetorical analysis while incorporating digital media frameworks to create a piece that adheres to scholarly expectations.

This work demonstrates my progress in SLO 2: Genre Mastery as I produce work in the rhetorical analysis genre, applying its conventions effectively while maintaining appropriate scholarly voice and stylistic techniques consistent with academic writing in the field of media studies.

Digital Narratives and Literary Tradition: Interactive Storytelling Project

Capstone Project | Creative & Critical Work | Spring 2025

My senior capstone project explores the intersection of traditional literary forms and digital storytelling. The project consists of an original interactive narrative accompanied by a critical reflection that documents my creative process from conception to completion.

The project includes a detailed reflective analysis that articulates the rationale behind my choices at each stage of development. I document how I identified problems with initial drafts, generated solutions through research and experimentation, and refined the work through multiple iterations based on peer and instructor feedback.

This work demonstrates my mastery of SLO 3: Process, as I thoroughly reflect on the artifact production process, including my development, research, composition, creative problem solving, and refinement stages. The accompanying documentation shows how my revisions improved the overall quality of the work and addressed challenges encountered during production.
